Accumulating evidence propose an age-dependent decline of brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass and activity in humans, indicative of a putative role of BAT in the development of obesity and other metabolic diseases with age. We are investigating whether the pre-programmed rate of ageing is determined, at least in part, through changes in BAT activity due to early life environmental temperatures.

UCP1 gene variants and health
Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) plays a pivotal role in thermogenesis and energy metabolism. We are currently leading an international consortium investigating the role of UCP1 gene variants in the interethnic difference observed in the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases across many countries in Europe and Asia.
